Over the years, I have watched many loved ones fight the taxing battle to cancer. While I cannot fully grasp the impact of this horrible disease, I have seen first-hand how easily it can change lives. My grandmother, Pooh, died at the age of 64 when I was a baby from lung and brain cancer. I wish she was here today to be a part of my life. Two of the strongest people I know, my step-grandmother, Amie, and grandfather, Pop-pop, have both bravely overcome this illness. Although their cancer journeys differ, both have shown me the courage it takes to overcome this disease. My grandparents battles with cancer, along with those of many others, have driven me to do any and everything that I can through this campaign to better the lives of cancer patients and families around the world. A different kind of journey that I have had the privilege of being even closer to, is that of my mom’s fundraising. My superstar of a mom, Molly Painter, is building 100 units of permanent, supportive housing for people experiencing homelessness called Kings Ridge in Raleigh. She has taught me that anything is possible when you dedicate yourself to achieving a goal. Over the past few years, my moms faith, love, and passion to help others has led her to where she is today and proven to me that one person can truly make a difference. My mom inspired me to begin fundraising for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society because I know that with YOUR help, we can change lives.
Julia's Student Visionaries of the Year Fundraiser
Visionaries look to the future—and see infinite possibility.
They challenge the status quo—and make the impossible possible.
They boldly imagine a better world – and lead the charge to create it.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society was built on that same vision - of a better world - one without blood cancers.
I am a visionary; I have a vision for a world without cancer, but I need your help.
This year, I’m proud to be a part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Student Visionaries of the Year Campaign, working to raise as much as possible for LLS’s mission.
As a global leader in the fight against blood cancer, LLS:
- Funds cutting-edge research leading to breakthroughs in immunotherapy, genomics and personalized medicine that are improving and saving the lives of patients
- Provides free education and support for blood cancer patients and families, including personalized, one-on-one support, assistance with identifying and enrolling in clinical trials, and more.
- Mobilizes thousands of advocates to drive policy changes that accelerate the development of new cancer treatments and break down barriers to care.
Please consider joining this fight by making a donation. All donations are greatly appreciated and tax-deductible. Please visit my website often and tell friends who would also like to donate!
Thanks to your support, my efforts will help ensure this generation is the last to see cancer.
On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere, thank you!

Bettie White Hudson was my “aunt,” but I never knew her. My mother’s younger sister, she died when she was three years old. Her life was cut short by childhood leukemia. When “little Bettie,” as I always heard her called, died in 1934, pediatric leukemia was almost always fatal. Now the survival rate for pediatric leukemia is about 90%. My hope is that the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s funding will help bring the survival rate from pedriatric leukemia and other blood cancers to 100%.
